A woman with her hair in braids lies face down with her eyes closed, receiving a deep tissue massage. The practitioner, wearing a blue uniform, uses her forearm to apply pressure to the patient’s upper back and shoulder area. The setting is bright and serene, with a white towel visible in the foreground.

What does a massage appointment look like?

Every session is a little different depending on the treatment, but here's what to expect in general:

  • Your therapist will begin by asking what's brought you in, any areas you'd like them to focus on, and any health conditions they should be aware of.
  • You'll have a chance to talk through what you're hoping to get from the session, so the therapist can tailor the treatment to you.
  • Massage is hands-on bodywork. Your therapist will explain what they're doing and check in with you throughout. Please speak up if the pressure or technique isn't right.
  • After the treatment, your therapist may offer simple self-care suggestions to help you get the most from the session.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between deep tissue massage and sports massage?

Both treatments work with the deeper layers of muscle, but they have different focuses. Deep tissue massage is well suited to general tension, chronic aches, and postural problems. Sports massage tends to be more movement-focused, often including an assessment of how you're moving and using your body, which makes it a popular choice for people who train regularly or are managing a sports-related issue. If you're not sure which fits your situation better, either therapist will be happy to advise when you get in touch.

Do I need to be sporty to benefit from sports massage?

Not at all. The name can be a bit misleading. Sports massage is a firm, therapeutic technique that can be just as useful for desk workers with tight hips as it is for someone training for a half marathon. It's about how your muscles and connective tissue are working, not whether you play a sport.

Is massage suitable during pregnancy?

Yes, with the right treatment. Pregnancy massage is specifically adapted to be safe and comfortable at each stage of pregnancy. If you're pregnant and considering a different type of massage, please get in touch first and we'll let you know what's suitable for where you are in your pregnancy.

Can massage help with stress and anxiety?

It can. Massage is primarily a physical treatment, but its effects on the nervous system often extend to easing feelings of stress and tension. Many clients find that regular sessions make a noticeable difference to how they feel day to day. Our Swedish / Relaxing Massage page has more on this if you'd like to read further.

Still Not Sure?
