Swedish / Relaxing Massage
Feeling like you haven't properly switched off in a while? Or carrying that familiar tightness in your shoulders that no amount of stretching ever quite shifts?
Sometimes the body just needs a proper chance to let go.
Also known as Swedish massage, relaxing massage is a gentle, full-body treatment that uses slow, flowing strokes and light to moderate pressure to ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and bring the nervous system down from high alert. It's not about targeting specific injuries or working deep into problem areas. It's about giving your body and mind the time and space to genuinely recover. If you leave feeling calmer, looser, and more like yourself, that's exactly what it's designed to do. If your muscles need something more focused, our deep tissue massage page might be a better fit.

What Can Relaxing Massage Help With?
Relaxing massage can support a wide range of everyday physical and mental health concerns. Stress is the most common reason people come to us, but the benefits tend to reach well beyond that.
- Stress and anxiety: the slow, rhythmic strokes may calm the nervous system and help lower levels of stress hormones in the body
- Muscle tension and stiffness: gentle work through the soft tissue can ease tightness across the shoulders, neck, and back
- Poor sleep: a calmer nervous system and more relaxed muscles often make it easier to fall and stay asleep
- Tension headaches: tightness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back can contribute to headaches; relaxing massage may help reduce their frequency
- Low mood and mental fatigue: many people find that regular massage helps them feel more grounded and clear-headed
- Poor circulation: the strokes used in Swedish massage encourage blood flow through the body's tissues
- General aches and pains: for everyday soreness and physical tiredness, a full-body massage can provide real relief
- Post-exercise recovery: light massage after physical activity may help ease muscle soreness and support recovery

What to Expect at Your First Appointment
- Wear comfortable clothing, or bring a change if you prefer; you'll be asked to undress to your underwear for the treatment, and you'll be covered with towels throughout, with only the area being worked on uncovered
- Your appointment will start with a short conversation about your health, any areas you'd like to focus on, and what you're hoping to get out of the session
- Your therapist will use a combination of long, gliding strokes, gentle kneading, and circular movements, adjusting the pressure to suit you as you go
- Most people find it deeply relaxing; it's perfectly fine if you drift off
- Afterwards you may feel a little drowsy or spacey; drink plenty of water, take a moment before heading out, and try to keep the rest of the day gentle if you can

Your Questions Answered
How is relaxing massage different from deep tissue massage?
The main difference is pressure and purpose. Relaxing massage uses lighter, flowing strokes across the whole body, with the goal of easing general tension and promoting calm. Deep tissue massage works more specifically into particular muscles or areas using firmer pressure, and is better suited to chronic tightness, injury, or postural issues. If you're not sure which is right for you, give us a call and we'll help you decide.
How often should I come?
It really depends on what you're hoping to get from it. For general stress relief and wellbeing, once a month works well for many people. If you're carrying a lot of tension or going through a particularly demanding stretch, more frequent sessions can help while things settle. Your therapist will be happy to talk through what makes sense for your situation.
Do I need to get undressed?
For a full-body relaxing massage, yes. You'll be asked to undress to your underwear so your therapist can work properly across the back, legs, and arms. You'll be covered with towels throughout, and only the area being treated will be uncovered at any one time. If you have any concerns about this before you arrive, please just let us know and we'll make sure you feel comfortable.
Is relaxing massage safe if I'm pregnant?
Pregnancy massage is a separate, specialist treatment we offer, designed specifically around the needs and comfort of pregnant clients. If you're pregnant, we'd recommend booking a pregnancy massage rather than a standard relaxing session, so your therapist can tailor everything appropriately. You can find out more on our Pregnancy Massage page.

Should I wait until it gets worse?
We hear this all the time: "It's not that bad yet, I'll see how it goes." The truth? Muscle and joint pain doesn't usually resolve the way a cut or bruise does. The longer compensation patterns continue, the harder they can be to correct. Early treatment often means: fewer sessions overall, faster recovery, lower risk of chronic issues, better long-term mobility. Prevention is always easier than cure.
