Acupuncture in Brixton

Maybe it's persistent pain that hasn't shifted with anything else. Maybe it's stress, poor sleep, or something to do with your hormones or fertility.

Whatever's brought you here, acupuncture might be worth a closer look.

Using fine, sterile needles inserted at specific points on the body, acupuncture stimulates your natural healing response and encourages the body to restore balance from the inside out. It's rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which means we look at the whole picture, not just the symptom in isolation. Alongside pain and stress, it's a therapy we use a lot for women's health, hormonal support, and fertility. We have a dedicated page on acupuncture for women's health if that's what you're looking for.

What Can Acupuncture Help With?

Acupuncture has a broad evidence base, and it's something we use across a wide range of concerns. Here's a flavour of what we commonly treat:

  • Chronic and acute pain, including back pain, neck pain, and joint pain: may help reduce inflammation and ease persistent tension
  • Headaches and migraines: can support a reduction in frequency and intensity over a course of treatment
  • Stress and anxiety: gentle support for the nervous system, may help you feel more settled and grounded
  • Hormonal imbalance and menstrual issues, including irregular cycles, painful periods, and PMS: may help ease and regulate symptoms
  • Women's fertility support, as a standalone therapy or alongside IVF and other assisted conception
  • Male fertility support, an often overlooked area that we treat directly alongside female fertility
  • Digestive complaints, including IBS and bloating: may help settle an overactive or sluggish gut
  • Sleep difficulties: supporting a more regular, restful pattern over time
  • Menopause symptoms, including hot flushes and mood changes: a popular choice for those wanting a natural, drug-free approach
  • Fatigue and low energy, particularly where no clear underlying cause has been identified
  • Side effects of cancer treatment, including fatigue, nausea, and pain: acupuncture can offer supportive care alongside conventional treatment
  • Post-operative recovery: may help with pain management, swelling, and the body's healing response
  • Scar healing: needling around scar tissue may support remodelling and help restore normal sensation

What does a massage appointment look like?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that gives easy access to your arms, legs, and back where possible.

  • Your first session starts with a consultation. We'll ask about your current symptoms, health history, sleep, digestion, and general lifestyle to build a full picture before we begin.
  • We'll then agree on a treatment plan and get started with the acupuncture itself. We place fine, sterile, single-use needles at specific points on your body. Most people find it far less uncomfortable than they expected.
  • You will likely feel a sensation at the needle sites: a dull ache, warmth, or slight tingling. In TCM, this is intentional: it tells your practitioner the point is active. It shouldn't be painful, but do let them know if anything feels too intense.
  • After your session, most people feel deeply relaxed and sometimes pleasantly tired. Give yourself a little time to wind down if you can, and drink plenty of water.

Frequently asked questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people are surprised at how comfortable it feels. As the needle passes through the skin, you may notice a brief pinch, but they're very fine (much thinner than those used for injections) and it passes quickly. Once in, you may feel a mild tingling, warmth, or dull ache at the needle site. In East Asian medicine, this sensation is called deqi, and it's a sign the point has been activated. Most people find the whole experience deeply relaxing. If anything feels too intense, just let your practitioner know and they can adjust.

How is traditional Chinese acupuncture different from dry needling?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete medical system with over 2,000 years of history behind it. When we treat with TCM acupuncture, we consider your whole health picture, including your sleep, digestion, emotional state, and how different symptoms connect, before deciding where to needle. It treats the whole person, not just the problem area. Dry needling is a more recent, more targeted technique focused on releasing tight muscle trigger points. We offer both at the clinic: our acupuncturists practise TCM, and several of our osteopaths are also trained in dry needling.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Yes, acupuncture can be a safe and effective option during pregnancy when carried out by a practitioner with experience in this area. Some of our acupuncturists specialise in pregnancy care and regularly treat the discomforts that come with it, from back and pelvic pain to nausea and fatigue. Take a look at the individual profiles to find out who offers pregnancy acupuncture.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies depending on what you're coming in for and how long you've been dealing with it. For something more recent or acute, people often notice a real difference within two or three sessions. Long-standing or more complex conditions tend to need more time. Your practitioner will give you an honest picture at your first appointment. If you'd like to talk it through before booking, just give us a call.

Should I wait until it gets worse?

We hear this all the time: "It's not that bad yet, I'll see how it goes." The truth? Muscle and joint pain doesn't usually resolve the way a cut or bruise does. The longer compensation patterns continue, the harder they can be to correct. Early treatment often means: fewer sessions overall, faster recovery, lower risk of chronic issues, better long-term mobility. Prevention is always easier than cure.
