Fertility
Trying to conceive is one of those things that can go from hopeful to all-consuming very quickly.
Whether you are in the early stages of trying, you have been at it for a while and things are not going to plan, or you are going through IVF or another form of assisted conception, many people find that complementary therapy has a useful role alongside whatever else they are doing.
At BTC, acupuncture is our main approach to fertility support, and it is an area our acupuncturists work with often and with a great deal of care.

Why conception can sometimes take longer than expected
There is rarely a single explanation for why things are taking time. Hormonal imbalances, irregular cycles, conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis, the quality of the uterine lining, and the overall environment of the reproductive system can all play a part. The impact of stress is also frequently underestimated. Sustained stress affects the hormonal system in ways that are real and measurable, and for some people it is a significant piece of the picture.
In other cases, every investigation comes back within normal range and there is still no clear answer. Unexplained infertility is more common than many people realise, and it can be one of the harder things to sit with.
It is also worth saying that fertility is not solely a women's health issue. Male factor infertility plays a role in a significant proportion of cases, and acupuncture has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine to support sperm health and quality as well.
How we approach it at BTC
Acupuncture is our first recommendation for anyone looking for complementary support with fertility. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, the aim is to support the body's hormonal balance, encourage healthy circulation to the uterus and ovaries, and help regulate the menstrual cycle where it has become irregular or disrupted. Stress and its effects on the system are also part of what acupuncture can help to address, and many people find that regular sessions leave them feeling calmer and more steady during what can be an emotionally demanding time.
If you are going through IVF, ICSI, or another assisted conception pathway, acupuncture can be used as a supportive complement before, during, and after treatment cycles. Our acupuncturists are experienced in working alongside medical treatment, and how that might look for you is something you can discuss with them from the outset.
Where a structural or physical cause is suspected, such as tension or restriction in the abdominal or pelvic area that may be affecting the reproductive organs, visceral osteopathy can be a relevant addition to acupuncture. This is a specialist area within the BTC team, and it is something we can talk through with you once we have a fuller picture of your situation.

Do you need a diagnosis before coming in?
No. Many people come to us while tests and investigations are still ongoing, or without any formal diagnosis at all. You do not need a confirmed condition, a completed set of results, or a referral from your GP. If you are finding it hard to conceive and you are curious about whether acupuncture might help, that is reason enough to get in touch. Your acupuncturist will take a full picture of your health and cycle history at your first appointment and build a plan from there.
Common Questions
Can acupuncture actually improve my chances of conceiving?
We want to be honest with you about this. Acupuncture is a complementary therapy, not a fertility treatment in the medical sense, and we would not want to make promises we cannot keep. What it can do is support the conditions the body needs: helping to regulate cycles, supporting hormonal balance, encouraging circulation to the reproductive organs, and easing the stress load that can quietly affect the whole system. For many people it forms a meaningful part of their broader approach, used alongside medical investigation or treatment rather than instead of it.
I am going through IVF. When should I start acupuncture?
This depends on where you are in your cycle and your treatment timeline, and it is something to work out with your acupuncturist at an initial appointment. Some people start several weeks or months before a cycle begins; others come in closer to embryo transfer. Earlier is generally more useful than starting mid-cycle, but there is no single right answer and your acupuncturist will help you think it through.
Can I come if I have been diagnosed with PCOS or endometriosis?
Yes. Both conditions can affect fertility in different ways, and they are presentations our acupuncturists see regularly. If either is part of your picture, it is worth mentioning when you book so your acupuncturist can tailor the approach from the start.
Does acupuncture work alongside fertility medications?
Generally yes, and many of our patients combine acupuncture with medications prescribed as part of their fertility treatment. Your acupuncturist will always want to know what you are taking so they can take the full picture into account. If you have any specific concerns, it is worth raising them with both your prescribing clinician and your acupuncturist.

Heavy or painful periods are closely connected to many of the same underlying hormonal and structural factors that can affect fertility, and if that is part of your picture it is worth reading more.
