Pregnancy Massage

Growing a baby is remarkable work, and your mind and body both feel it.

Back ache, swollen ankles, restless nights, that persistent heaviness that follows you everywhere by the third trimester: if any of that sounds familiar, pregnancy massage might be exactly what you need. It is a gentle, fully adapted treatment designed specifically for this stage of life, using specialist positioning, cushions, and soothing techniques to help you feel genuinely comfortable and well cared for. Whether you are hoping to ease a specific ache or simply want some quiet time to rest and reconnect with your body, it is one of the kindest things you can give yourself right now.

What Can Pregnancy Massage Help With?

Pregnancy brings so many changes so quickly, and your body often needs a little extra support to keep pace. Some of the most common things pregnancy massage may help with:

  • Back pain and lower back tension: one of the most frequent complaints in pregnancy, and something gentle, targeted soft tissue work can often ease considerably
  • Pelvic girdle pain and pubic symphysis dysfunction: may help reduce discomfort and improve ease of movement as the pelvis adapts to pregnancy
  • Hip tightness and leg aches: loosening the muscles and connective tissue that bear extra load as your posture and centre of gravity shift
  • Swelling in the legs and feet: light massage techniques can support circulation and may help reduce fluid retention
  • Sciatic pain: gentle work around the lower back and glutes may ease the pressure that so often builds on the sciatic nerve during pregnancy
  • Headaches and neck tension: frequently linked to postural changes and stress, and often very responsive to careful soft tissue work
  • Anxiety and stress: the deeply relaxing nature of the treatment supports your nervous system as much as your muscles
  • Fatigue and poor sleep: many people find they sleep noticeably better in the days following a session

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Wear something loose and easy to remove: you will be undressing to your underwear and lying under towels throughout, so comfortable clothing makes everything much simpler

  • We will start with a short consultation to understand how you are feeling, how far along you are, and whether there are any particular areas you would like us to focus on
  • You will be settled into a carefully supported position using pillows and bolsters, usually lying on your side, so you are comfortable throughout with no pressure on your bump at any point
  • The treatment is slow, gentle, and deeply relaxing; your therapist will check in as they work and adjust pressure to suit you
  • Most people feel wonderfully calm and a little sleepy afterwards; it is worth drinking plenty of water and giving yourself time to rest for the remainder of the day

Your Questions Answered

Is pregnancy massage safe?

Yes. When carried out by a trained and qualified practitioner, pregnancy massage is considered safe throughout pregnancy. We do recommend letting your midwife or GP know you are having massage, particularly if you have any pregnancy complications or have been advised to rest. If you are at all unsure, give us a call and we will help you work out whether it is right for you at this stage.

When in pregnancy can I have a massage?

We see clients from the second trimester onwards, typically from around 14 weeks. Many practitioners prefer to wait until after the first trimester as a precautionary measure, and we follow that guideline here. If you are in your first trimester and keen to get started, please do get in touch and we will have a conversation about the right timing for you.

How is pregnancy massage different from a regular massage?

The techniques are adapted to be gentler and more supportive, and the positioning is completely different. Rather than lying face down, you will be comfortably settled on your side with pillows providing full support throughout. Certain pressure points and areas are avoided, and everything is tailored to your stage of pregnancy. It is a much more considered and specific treatment than a standard massage.

Thinking of Buying This as a Gift?

Pregnancy massage makes a genuinely lovely gift for someone who is expecting. You can purchase a gift voucher for them to use whenever they are ready. Or if you would like to book and pay for a specific appointment on someone else's behalf, our FAQs explain exactly how to do that.

Should I wait until it gets worse?

We hear this all the time: "It's not that bad yet, I'll see how it goes." The truth? Muscle and joint pain doesn't usually resolve the way a cut or bruise does. The longer compensation patterns continue, the harder they can be to correct. Early treatment often means: fewer sessions overall, faster recovery, lower risk of chronic issues, better long-term mobility. Prevention is always easier than cure.
