Physiotherapy

Searching for a physiotherapist in Brixton? Whether you're dealing with a recent injury, recovering from surgery, or carrying pain that's been building for a while, physiotherapy could be exactly what you need.

Physiotherapy is a hands-on, exercise-based treatment that helps restore movement, reduce pain, and get your body functioning the way it should. It combines manual therapy, targeted exercise, and rehabilitation strategies to get to the root of the problem rather than just managing symptoms. Treatment is always tailored to you: what you do, what you want to get back to, and how your body is responding. The goal isn't just to feel better in the short term. It's to build strength and resilience so the problem is less likely to come back.

What Can Physiotherapy With?

Physiotherapy is used for a wide range of musculoskeletal and movement-related conditions. Some of the most common reasons people come to see us include:

  • Back and neck pain: including problems that have become persistent or come and go over time
  • Sports injuries: sprains, strains, and muscle tears, from early recovery through to returning to sport
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation: helping restore strength and mobility after joint replacements, ligament repairs, or similar procedures
  • Shoulder problems: including frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries, and impingement
  • Knee and hip pain: from everyday wear and tear through to more acute injury
  • Sciatica and nerve pain: where symptoms radiate into the arms, legs, or feet
  • Postural problems: particularly those linked to desk work, repetitive strain, or long-standing movement habits
  • Chronic pain: longer-term pain that hasn't shifted, addressed through a combination of hands-on treatment and movement retraining

Meet Our Therapists

To practise physiotherapy in the UK, a therapist must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and hold a recognised degree in physiotherapy from an accredited programme. Our physiotherapists combine manual therapy skills with exercise-based rehabilitation, building a programme that moves with you from first appointment through to full recovery.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

  • Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, as your physiotherapist will need to assess your posture and range of movement
  • Your first session starts with a thorough consultation: what's been happening, how long it's been going on, and what makes it better or worse
  • You'll have a physical assessment so your physiotherapist can understand how you're moving and where the pain or restriction is coming from
  • Treatment often begins in the same session and may include hands-on work, guided movement, or a combination of both
  • You'll usually leave with exercises to do at home, and these are central to how physiotherapy works, not just an add-on
  • Some people notice immediate relief; others see gradual improvement over the days that follow. Your physiotherapist will let you know what to expect

Frequently asked questions

Is Osteopathy the Same as Physiotherapy?

There's more overlap than most people expect. Both are hands-on physical therapies that treat musculoskeletal conditions, and the list of things they can help with is largely the same: back and joint pain, sports injuries, nerve pain, post-surgical recovery, and more. Physiotherapy tends to place a particularly strong emphasis on exercise-based rehabilitation, rebuilding strength and retraining movement patterns as the core of treatment. Osteopathy takes a broader structural view, looking at how different parts of the body connect and affect each other. In practice, many patients do well with either. At BTC we offer both, so if you're not sure which is right for you, just give us a call and we can help you decide.

Do I need a GP referral before booking?

No. You can book directly with us without a referral. If your GP has already referred you for physiotherapy, that's fine too, but it isn't a requirement. Just get in touch and we'll get you booked in.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what you're dealing with. A straightforward injury might resolve in a handful of sessions; something more complex or long-standing will likely take longer. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic picture of what to expect after the initial assessment, and your plan can be adjusted as things progress.

Can physiotherapy help with long-term or chronic pain?

Yes, and it's often very well-suited to it. Chronic pain can become embedded in how the body moves and compensates over time, and physiotherapy addresses both the physical and functional side of that. A combination of hands-on treatment and progressive exercise can help retrain the body and reduce pain gradually. It isn't always a quick fix, but it's one of the most evidence-based approaches available.

Should I wait until it gets worse?

We hear this all the time: "It's not that bad yet, I'll see how it goes." The truth? Muscle and joint pain doesn't usually resolve the way a cut or bruise does. The longer compensation patterns continue, the harder they can be to correct. Early treatment often means: fewer sessions overall, faster recovery, lower risk of chronic issues, better long-term mobility. Prevention is always easier than cure.
