Indian Head Massage
Carrying tension in your head, neck, and shoulders? Struggling with headaches that creep up through the working day?
Indian Head Massage works directly with the areas that tend to hold the most stress, and helps your body let go of it.
Rooted in ancient Ayurvedic traditions, it's a treatment focused on the upper body: the scalp, neck, shoulders, and upper back. Using a combination of rhythmic massage strokes and targeted pressure points, our therapists work to release muscle tightness, improve circulation, and bring on a deep sense of calm and clarity. It's restorative, grounding, and often one of the most immediately effective treatments for stress-related tension.

What Can Indian Head Massage Help With?
Indian Head Massage is particularly well suited to stress and tension held in the upper body, though its effects often reach further than that.
- Stress and generalised tension: rhythmic massage encourages the nervous system to settle into a more relaxed state
- Headaches and migraines: releasing tightness in the scalp, neck, and shoulders may help reduce both frequency and intensity
- Neck and shoulder stiffness: direct work on muscles that commonly hold tension can ease restriction and improve day-to-day comfort
- Eye strain and screen fatigue: especially helpful if you spend long hours at a desk; may ease the tension that builds around the temples and eyes
- Poor sleep: the deeply calming effect of the treatment can support better rest, particularly when sleep is disrupted by stress
- Anxiety: the gentle, rhythmic quality of the treatment has a grounding and settling effect on an overactive nervous system
- Scalp health: improved circulation to the scalp may support a healthier scalp and ease surface tension
- General fatigue and burnout: a reset for the upper body, helping you feel lighter and more clear-headed

What to Expect at Your First Appointment
- Wear something comfortable with easy access to the neck and shoulders; you'll remain fully clothed throughout the session
- Your therapist will start with a few questions about your health, any areas of tension or discomfort, and what you're hoping to get out of the treatment
- The session is carried out seated, working across the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp, and sometimes the face; if your therapist offers to use a small amount of oil on the scalp, just let them know if you'd prefer they don't
- Most people find the treatment deeply relaxing, and it's not unusual to feel pleasantly drowsy by the end
- You may feel a little light-headed or spacey afterwards; take a moment before heading straight back out into the day

Your Questions Answered
How often should I come?
A lot of people find a monthly session keeps stress and tension from building up in the first place. If you're dealing with something more specific, like regular headaches or persistent neck tightness, coming more frequently at first can make a real difference. Your therapist will give you a sense of what might work best after your first visit.
Is Indian Head Massage safe during pregnancy?
Generally yes, though as with any treatment during pregnancy it's worth mentioning it when you book so your therapist can adapt the session appropriately. If you have any particular medical considerations, we'd recommend checking with your midwife or GP beforehand.
What does it feel like?
Most people describe it as deeply relaxing, with a quality that's hard to find anywhere else. Some areas, particularly the neck and shoulders if you're carrying a lot of tightness there, may feel a little tender at first, but your therapist will work to your comfort level throughout. By the end, most people feel genuinely lighter and calmer.
How is it different from a regular neck and shoulder massage?
A neck and shoulder massage focuses mainly on the muscles in those areas. Indian Head Massage takes a broader approach, working from the upper back all the way up through the neck, scalp, and sometimes the face, using a blend of massage strokes, pressure point work, and rhythmic movements drawn from Ayurvedic tradition. The scope is wider, and the deeply meditative quality of it gives it a distinct character of its own.

Should I wait until it gets worse?
We hear this all the time: "It's not that bad yet, I'll see how it goes." The truth? Muscle and joint pain doesn't usually resolve the way a cut or bruise does. The longer compensation patterns continue, the harder they can be to correct. Early treatment often means: fewer sessions overall, faster recovery, lower risk of chronic issues, better long-term mobility. Prevention is always easier than cure.
