What is Osteopathy?

Osteopaths Brixton: Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person's muscles and joints. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together."We will teach you how to understand your pain so that you can control your body through pain and beyond."

Why Osteopathy?

It is commonly known in our profession that there are crossovers in methods of Osteopaths, Physiotherapists and Chiropractors. Although each profession uses slightly different techniques and adopts a different philosophy they all work towards the same goal.

Our Osteopaths spend a minimum of 4 years to learn to become professional osteopaths, qualified by the GOsC (General Osteopathic Council)

Since 1999 our Osteopaths in Brixton have been practicing at our centre, so we have some highly experienced practitioners.

For more information on what we treat please see below or call 02077339944 for more information. We cannot stress enough how important it is to assess and treat any pain you feel as quickly as possible. Unlike cuts or blisters that heals over time joint or muscle pain needs treatment and exercise to heal. We help you figure out the cause of your pain before treating the area in need to then produce an exercise plan to avoid similar issues in the future. We hope that you do not need our services, however if you are feeling any pain currently and are unsure if we treat your issue please call 02077339944.

Techniques Osteopaths use:

  • Massage – by freeing the joints and muscles affected by back pain, massage can be used to restore the whole body's vitality. Osteopaths also use traction, where your head, feet, and hands are lifted and gently pulled to relieve stress.

  • Joint manipulation – used to realign a joint in order to restore movement. Patients with back pain often have restricted vertebral joints.

  • Muscle Energy Technique – using the patients own muscle contraction to apply a counterforce by the osteopath to relax and lengthen the muscle.

  • Counterstrain Technique – allowing the restricted joint to relax in a position of greater comfort.

  • Cranial Osteopathy – gentle bodywork using the cranio-sacral rhythm to alleviate pain and stress.

Osteopathy for Prevention and Good Health

Don't wait until your aches become a pain; preventative health care is best.

You will need fewer treatments overall if you get it sorted straight away AND you can aim to feel your best; optimum well-being, not merely 'not in pain'. 'A stitch in time saves nine' as the old proverb wisely states.

Osteopaths in Brixton Therapy Centre, assess and treat people of any age from the elderly to the newborn and from pregnant women to sports people.

Although osteopaths treat many conditions, most people think of us as ‘back specialists’ and back pain is what osteopaths treat a lot of the time. We also, however, treat a range other conditions.

Osteopaths can identify any weaknesses in your body that have occurred from old injuries so that you can understand your body better and get back to the activities you love.

If you need advice about whether your problem is suitable for osteopathy then just give us a ring.

What to expect during your visit.

During your first consultation at Brixton Therapy Centre, your osteopath will examine you, reach a diagnosis and, with your consent, start your treatment. You will also be prescribed some gentle exercises to start your rehabilitation. After your first session your osteopath should be able to give you a rough idea of how many sessions you will need to get better.

Our aim is to get you pain free as soon as possible.

Osteopaths are experienced professionals.

An osteopath must study for five years for an undergraduate degree. This is similar to an undergraduate medical degree, with emphasis on anatomy and musculoskeletal medicine, and includes more than 1,000 hours of training in osteopathic techniques.

By law, osteopaths must register with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). It is an offence for anyone to call themselves an osteopath if they are not registered. The British Medical Association’s guidance for general practitioners states that doctors can safely refer patients to osteopaths.

Excellent hands on treatment.
