Acupuncture is a safe treatment. Some people have acupuncture as a preventative measure to strengthen their constitution, or because they feel unwell. It can also be used alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of both acute and chronic disease.

Acupuncture has been known to help many conditions, we've listed common ones below. Our centre has a team of experienced acupuncturists with diverse training including TCM (Chinese Traditional Medicine), Five Elements and Stems and Branches.

Acupuncture is a holistic form of health care, which is over 2000 years old. In recent years there has been increased scientific research into the benefits of acupuncture.

Acupuncture is based upon the belief that health is dependent upon the smooth flow of Qi energy. Many factors can upset the natural balance of Qi;

  • Poor nutrition

  • Infections, trauma, surgery

  • Stress, grief, anxiety, fear

  • Hereditary constitution

When you come for treatment the flow of your energy will be assessed by taking your pulses on both wrists and looking at your tongue. A treatment will then be designed, from over 500 acupuncture points, specifically for your needs.

Acupuncture needles are not at all like the needles experienced in Western medicine. The sensation experienced is not the piercing of the skin by a needle, but the connection made when the needle reaches the point intended. This may feel like a sensation of heaviness, a dull ache, or a tingling sensation traveling along the channel. Most people enjoy the treatment, experiencing a feeling of heaviness and relaxation.

Other techniques may be employed to enhance treatment, such as the smouldering of herbs over acupuncture points to warm and encourage the body's energy, or the use of cupping, an ancient technique using suction to stimulate and move the body's energy particularly in muscular conditions.

Many patients who have had acupuncture simply feel better in themselves, feeling stronger, more decisive or confident, or less affected by life events. Often they cannot describe how they feel different, yet the evidence is there in their new found abilities. This may enable patients to improve their life situations for the better, often facilitating radical change.

Our centre has a particular interest in treating fertility and pregnancy.

Acupuncture for Hayfever

Acupuncture has garnered attention in recent years for its potential to alleviate the symptoms of hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis. By targeting specific points along the body's energy pathways, or meridians, acupuncture aims to rebalance the flow of energy, or Qi, to promote overall health and well-being.

When it comes to hay fever, acupuncture is believed to help regulate the immune system's response to allergens, reducing inflammation and mitigating symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes.

One of the key benefits of acupuncture for hay fever sufferers is its ability to provide relief from symptoms without the side effects commonly associated with conventional medications.

Unlike antihistamines or decongestants, which can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, and other unwanted effects, acupuncture offers a natural and holistic approach to symptom management. By stimulating specific acupuncture points related to the respiratory system and immune function, practitioners aim to address the root cause of hay fever symptoms, providing long-lasting relief and improving overall quality of life.

Moreover, acupuncture is often used in conjunction with other complementary therapies, such as herbal medicine and dietary modifications, to enhance its effectiveness in treating hay fever.

By addressing the individual's unique constitution and underlying imbalances, acupuncture can offer personalized care that targets the specific triggers and manifestations of hay fever.

Whether used as a standalone treatment or as part of a comprehensive wellness plan, acupuncture holds promise as a safe and effective option for individuals seeking relief from the bothersome symptoms of hay fever.

Acupuncture for Fertility

Acupuncture can help prepare you and your partner for conception. You may wish to detox before conceiving or indeed may be having trouble conceiving.

For women

Treatments are focused on processes that in combination lead to successful ovulation, fertilisation and implantation of the embryo.

Reducing stress, increasing uterine blood flow and motility and regulating the complex interplay between the nervous system and hormone levels. Acupuncture can help to restore ovulation disrupted by conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome.

Lifestyle advice especially regarding diet, relaxation and moderate exercise can support the treatments.

For men

It takes about 100 days for the sperm to develop to maturity and acupuncture during this time can help improve the quality and quantity of sperm.

Assisted Conception

For men and women undergoing assisted conception, acupuncture sessions can offer a haven of peace and stability through what can be a physical and emotional rollercoaster. By helping you to relax we can support you on your journey.

Many women have said they really appreciate a space that is focussed on them, with an understanding of what they are going through. Acupuncture can also help to reduce the side effects of the medication and hormones given during assisted conception.

Research has shown that acupuncture sessions an hour or so before and after embryo transfer increased pregnancy rates by 15% in 2002.

In recognition of the positive influence of acupuncture on conception rates many hospitals actively accommodate our treatments on site. Our centre is within easy reach of King’s, Guy’s & St Thomas’s and The Lister.

For more information on the latest research and evidence please click through to the British Acupuncture Council and for information on; female fertility, male fertility or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)

Acupuncture for Pregnancy

Acupuncture can support women through a range of issues that arise during pregnancy from nausea in the first trimester, tiredness, varicose veins, haemorrhoids and muscle and joint pain at any stage, to turning breech babies in the final trimester.

The treatment for turning breech babies deserves special mention: it does not involve needles, results in a 72% success rate compared with 53% in the control group and can be self-administered at home following a demonstration session.

Other women, concerned by serious complications such as pre-eclampsia during previous pregnancies have had preventative acupuncture during later pregnancies with no complications. It can also offer an alternative to medication for non-pregnancy related issues, like hayfever, and those that may be more prevalent during pregnancy, such as sinusitis, skin rashes or insomnia.

In many cultures, including China, there are prescribed periods of rest for a month after childbirth to enable the mother to recover. In our culture women often feel the pressure to get back to normal life very quickly, which can contribute to post natal depression, feelings of inadequacy and exhaustion. Support for women at this time is vital.

Acupuncture has a lot to offer in helping women regain their energy and strength, recover emotionally and physically from what may have been a traumatic birth, encourage milk flow, relieve mastitis and to help the pelvic organs and structures to recover and relieve any accompanying after pains.

Transform Your Health with Acupuncture in South West London: What You Need to Know

Introduction to Acupuncture

Hello there, I'm glad you've taken the time to explore the fascinating world of acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine practice that has been around for thousands of years. As someone who has personally experienced the transformative power of acupuncture in South West London, I can't wait to share my knowledge and insights with you.

In its essence, acupuncture is a form of therapy that involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at specific points on your body. It's used to treat a wide range of health conditions, including chronic pain, stress, depression, insomnia and many more. Despite its ancient origins, it's backed by modern science, with numerous studies showing its efficacy and benefits.

But wait, before you start imagining yourself as a human pin cushion, let me assure you that acupuncture is a painless procedure, and when done correctly, can be quite relaxing. It's a holistic approach to healing, focusing on the entire body rather than just treating symptoms.

The History and Popularity of Acupuncture in South West London

Acupuncture has a rich history dating back over 2000 years. It has gained immense popularity in South West London over the past few decades. The multicultural, vibrant area of South West London has always been open to embracing alternative and holistic therapies, and acupuncture is no exception.

With the bustle and stress of London life, more and more Londoners are turning to acupuncture to find relief and balance. The rise in popularity can also be attributed to the growing body of research validating its effectiveness. Acupuncture is now widely recognised within both public and private healthcare sectors in London.

South West London, in particular, has seen a surge in acupuncture clinics, offering services from general wellness to specific treatments for conditions like migraines, anxiety, and fertility issues. Whether it's Brixton, Clapham, Herne Hill or Tulse Hill, each neighbourhood has its unique clinics, practitioners and acupuncture styles.

Health Benefits of Acupuncture

If you're wondering why you should consider acupuncture, let's talk about some of the health benefits. First and foremost, acupuncture is known for its pain-relieving properties. It's effective for treating various types of pain, including headaches, joint pain, neck pain and back pain.

But the benefits of acupuncture extend far beyond pain relief. It can also help with stress and anxiety. We live in a world where stress is a part of daily life, and acupuncture can help to alleviate some of that stress, promoting relaxation and a sense of calm.

Furthermore, acupuncture can boost your energy levels. If you're feeling fatigued or run down, an acupuncture session might be just what you need to get your energy levels back up. It can also enhance sleep quality, making it an excellent treatment for insomnia.

How Acupuncture Works

So how does acupuncture work? Traditional Chinese medicine believes in the concept of Qi (pronounced as "chee"), a vital energy that flows through our body. When this energy flow is disrupted, it results in illness or discomfort. Acupuncture aims to restore this energy flow by stimulating specific points (acupuncture points) on the body.

From a scientific perspective, acupuncture works by stimulating the body's natural healing mechanisms. The needle insertions stimulate the nervous system, releasing chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals either change the perception of pain or release other chemicals that influence the body's self-regulating systems.

If you're considering acupuncture in Brixton, you're in for a unique experience. Brixton is known for its diverse practitioners who bring a mix of traditional and modern practices. The sessions may vary depending on your specific needs and the practitioner's style, but generally, your first session will involve an initial consultation where the acupuncturist will assess your health condition and devise a treatment plan.

During the treatment, the practitioner will insert thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on your body. You might feel a slight pinch as the needle goes in, but any discomfort is usually minimal and short-lived. The needles will stay in for about 20-30 minutes while you relax in a calm, peaceful environment.
