Mardi Jamieson: clinic director and osteopath
Mardi qualified as an osteopath and a naturopath in 1994 and since then she has worked all over the UK, providing treatments to a range of people; from farmers in Lincolnshire to ex Rugby players in Cardiff. She settled in Brixton in 1997 after meeting her partner Fergus (who now manages the clinic with her). After having her son Sam in 1998 she rushed to set her own practice up before she had her next child Esther in 2001. Brixton Therapy Centre was born; originally named Brixton Back Pain Clinic.
She started small; just one room in Acre Lane, containing herself and Emma Tubmen. Emma offered massage on Mardi's day off. They soon moved to the current premises on Brixton Road in 2002. Mardi then had two rooms which enabled her to offer many more therapies.
Late in 2008 she created a further two therapy rooms within the centre. So BTC now has four therapy rooms and a much wider range of therapies. Mardi says she is very proud of the team she has at the centre, many of whom have been with her from the beginning. Together they offer a unique service to Brixton and the surrounding area.
Mardi says: "my aim has always been to offer my clients a fully integrated complementary health care service. Most of my clients come in with neck or back pain but I've always been aware that there can be many causative factors. So if I need to refer to an acupuncturist to help reduce inflammation for tendonitis or to a homeopath for help with eczema, or indeed to a counsellor for help with a stressful life situation I have a team of experienced therapists that I know well and can refer my clients to with confidence."
More of her time these days is spent running the centre but she still treat patients on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. She says that what she has enjoyed over the years is getting to treat whole families, or networks of friends, seeing children being born and families grow and knowing that she has created a service from birth onwards.
