Interview with Kathy on Dulwich On View

From Bananarama pop to Zumba Fitness

By Shapa Begum | Published 12 November 2010

Meet Kathy Yvanovich; dancer, life coach and personal trainer. She was an assistant to Bruce Tonioli from Strictly Come Dancing; sipped tea with Boy George's Gran and now runs her own Zumba class! Read on to find out more about her life and career...

Those of you old enough to recall the mid-80s pop charts will know Paul Young, Bananarama, Rick Astley and remember the sexy Hot Gossip dancers on the Kenny Everett Show.

Way back then, when  Personal Trainer  was only heard in Hollywood, Kathy Yvanovich (then Kathy Laser) was a  private dance teacher/choreographer  for those singers and other luminaries gracing Top Of The Pops, and one of the Hot Gossip touring groups dancers was her bridesmaid. 28 years ago, everyone wore black, leggings were fashionable, and people copied Adam Ant's or Grace Jones's make-up.

Kathy taught jazz dance classes in Covent Garden nearly every day as assistant teacher to the late, great and sadly missed teacher-choreographer Alain Dehayes; then after her first baby, she was Assistant to Bruno Tonioli - now one of the TV judges on  Strictly Come Dancing.  Bruno was a successful choreographer by then, along with Arlene Phillips (ex  Strictly &  judge) who started the controversial Hot Gossip dance troupe.  Those were the days of punk and pop side by side, robotics and Madonna's vogueing.  Boy George became a big star, as he will always be in Kathy s eyes, and once she was asked to teach his brother David O Dowd (by his manager who called herself Miss World), so he  didn't look like his brother George!  Kathy remembers going to their big house near Greenwich, sipping tea with their Gran and seeing George's childhood drawings on the wall.

Bruno and Arlene from Strictly Come DancingAlong came the 90's.  Jane Fonda's aerobics had already hit the UK and classes were jam-packed with leg-warmers, wrist-warmers, sweaty head bands and the din of Reeboks jogging on the spot. A fitness craze had begun.  Dance classes became less fashionable in favour of this new fad.  But personal disaster struck, so Kathy moved north to The Wirral, south of the Mersey, Liverpool. Liverpool was teeming with students, musos, artists, actors, performers, creative types.  Birthplace of The Beatles, there are two art galleries and the world s first museum of slavery. Kathy's most memorable art installation was by Rachel Whiteread at Tate Liverpool: one entered a vast room in the warehouse building, then cleaved one's way between hundreds of thick canvas sheets and strips hanging from the ceiling; it was easy to get lost in the maze.

Sunbed orange tans and track suits were everywhere and Kathy thought, well, might as well adapt, so she became an exercise and gym Instructor and joined the Step, LegsBumsAndTums brigade. Not entirely satisfied with her creative output, she took an Acting Diploma (with LLAM Hons) and a Physical Theatre course at The Everyman. Treading the boards, teaching kids drama, aerobics, and jazz dance at college was racy and fun, but Kathy missed London's different opportunities and her old friends, so she moved back to Dulwich with her family.

St Barnabas Parish Hall, Dulwich VillageIt wasn't easy. Things had changed. Hip hop and jerky street dance was a la mode. Kathy found herself as a single mum and inherited a labrador, Bella. Hurray for Dulwich Hamlet School down the road, Dulwich Park round the corner, Dulwich Library for after-school homework and latch-key kids and computers upstairs, few homes had computers then. A friend recommended her to an agency (LAPT) and Kathy started working as a Personal Trainer to fit around the kids, ran Partyplay Unique Children's Drama Parties, then studied Life Coaching, NLP and Reiki healing in response to clients needs as well as sorting out her own.

Years passed, the children grew up and Kathy missed teaching big groups of people dancing to loud music. One day, she tried a Zumba dance fitness class and was hooked: easy-to-follow moves, happy music, 70% hot Latino plus country & western/Bollywood/Bhangra etc. As well as transforming her clients as  The Mind Body and Soul Coach , Kathy decided to train as a Zumba Instructor this summer. Come along to her Zumba classes at St Barnabas Parish Hall, Dulwich Village every Thursday at 6.30pm. Just turn up and Join the Party!
